Young Muslim women surge to success in American elections

In Virginia, four Muslim women won their races. Democrat Ghazala Hashmi unseated incumbent Republican Glen Sturtevant in a surprise victory to take a State Senate seat. Also celebrating in Virginia were Lisa Zargarpur, elected to the Prince William County School Board, Buta Biberaj, who became Loudoun County’s new commonwealth’s attorney in a tight race against the incumbent Republican candidate, and 24 year-old Abrar Omeish, who took a place on the Fairfax County School Board making her both the youngest person to hold elected office in the state.

Hashmi joins other Muslim women who secured historic wins on Tuesday, including 24-year-old Abrar Omeish, who is also from Virginia and shares the accolade with Hashmi as one of the first Muslim women elected in the state, as well as being the youngest woman to hold elected office in Virginia’s history. In Minnesota, Nadia Mohamed became the first Muslim and Somali person elected to the St. Louis Park City Council. Meanwhile in Maine, Safiya Khalid, another Somali Muslim woman, became the youngest person and the first Somali immigrant elected to the Lewiston City Council.
