American-Libyan woman elected for Fairfax County School Board in the US

Libyan-American Abrar Omeish clinched one of three vacant seats on the Fairfax County School Board in the US.

Celebrating her win, Omeish, 24, said she was the youngest woman to hold elected office in Virginia’s history and also the first Muslim woman to be elected in the state.

Omeish, along with Democrats Karen Keys-Gamarra and Rachna Sizemore Heizer, won the three open seats on the Fairfax County School Board.

Fairfax Democratic School Board Candidates Weigh In on Latino Issues

The participants are affiliated with FCPS as either parents, school system alumni or administrators and hold different professional backgrounds. Providence District school board candidate Karl Frisch is a former small business owner and worked on the school board’s Citizens for Better Schools committee. Mason District school board candidate Ricardy Anderson is a former teacher and principal with two current Fairfax Schools children. At-large candidates include Rachna Sizemore-Heizer, a college professor and parent of three children from the school system, Abrar Omeish, an FCPS alumnus who’s worked with the schools’ central office and school board in multiple roles and incumbent Karen Keys-Gamarra, an attorney and parent of three FCPS alumni.

Fairfax County Candidates Speak Out at Forum

Candidate Abrar E. Omeish said she's running for the seat because Fairfax County is one of the most successful counties in the country; at the same time, meritocracy exists along with disparities and inequalities. "The American Dream is under threat," she said. Omeish talked about children with food insecurities. "The kids who can't hear the teachers' instructions over the grumbling of their tummies…I encourage you to join me. Who wants to fight for that leader in every child in Fairfax County?"
